Sarah Frieberg

Artist Statement

My art wanders simultaneously through both my celebratory relationship of the earth and the dark cavernous moments of spiritual healing. Inspired by smells, textures, pattern and light, it uniquely fuses impressions from the land, my horticultural background and spiritual practices to create uncontrolled alchemical abstract responses. The work occupies both two and three dimensional space employing a range of earth-based raw materials on the working surface such as homemade inks and plant matter. The uncontrolled responses give way to unpredictable reactions where the illusion of control is tested, acknowledging the dualistic existence of regeneration and impermanence.

Bio

San Francisco based artist, Sarah Friebergs’ work was born out of her love for the land and the urge to create. Growing up at the base of Mt Diablo California and spending many years living and hiking in the Mt Shasta and Sierra range, she has engendered an intimate relationship with her surrounding environment. Inspired by smells, textures, light, and sound, she has uniquely fused her impressions from the land, horticultural background and spiritual practices to create uncontrolled alchemical abstract responses. Sarah’s relationship to control changed dramatically after experiencing a severe stroke in 2012 prompting an internal search of control and impermanence through her work. Enacting a range of earth-based raw materials on the working surface such as homemade inks and plant matter gives way to unpredictable reactions where the illusion of control is tested.
